Can I hang the hook on the string/ wire at the back of the artwork?

Hanging your picture with just one hanging wire may seem the easiest solution, but it’s not the safest method. Here are a few reasons why relying on a single wire and hook can be problematic:

  1. Stability Issues: The artwork can easily tip out of level and possibly slide off if bumped by a passerby or blown by a breeze. This can cause your picture to become crooked or even fall off the wall, leading to potential damage.
  2. Difficulty in Alignment: With just one hook affixed to the wire at the back of the picture, it’s challenging to keep the picture straight. The hook tends to slide on the wire, making it difficult to achieve and maintain a level position.
  3. Flatter and More Secure Hanging: Using two hanging wires (aka cables) and hooks ensures that the artwork stays level and hangs flatter against the wall. This method provides greater stability and reduces the risk of the picture tilting or falling.
  4. Ease of Adjustment: Slipping the two hooks into D-rings attached to the back of the artwork makes adjusting the picture to get it level much easier. D-rings provide fixed points for the hooks, allowing for precise positioning and alignment.
  5. Enhanced Safety: This two-hook & cable with d-rings method is safer for your artwork, especially for larger or heavier pieces. It distributes the weight more evenly, reducing the strain on a single point and minimizing the risk of damage to the frame or wall.
  6. Professional Appearance: A picture that hangs level and flat against the wall looks more professional and aesthetically pleasing. This is particularly important in settings where presentation matters, such as galleries, offices, or beautiful homes.

In summary, while using a single hanging wire and hook might save you a bit of time, opting for 2 cables, 2 hooks  and 2 d-rings is a much more secure and practical solution. It ensures that your artwork remains safely and beautifully displayed.
