From an aesthetic viewpoint, the rail does just look best if you install it along the top of your wall just below the ceiling similar to a cornice element from wall to wall – ie from corner to corner or from edge to edge.
If you are on a tight budget you could install your hanging track just on the “sweet spot” where you plan to hang your artwork.
